On August 20, COSCO SHIPPING SCORPIO, a 20,000 TEU containership built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS) for COSCO SHIPPING Container Lines was named and delivered. Chairman and Party Secretary of COSCO SHIPPING Capt. Xu Lirong, Deputy Mayor of Dalian Mr. Jin Guowei, Member of the National Committee of CPPCC Mr. Dong Qiang, Chairman and Party Secretary of Shanghai International Port Group Mr. Chen Xuyuan, President of Port of Dalian Mr. Xu Song, as well as leaders and guests from China Classification Society, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, attended the ceremony. Ms. Xia Qinjian named the vessel and cut her cable as the godmother. Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING Mr. Wang Yuhang and relevant heads of COSCO SHIPPING Container Lines, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry and COSCO SHIPPING’s divisions were also present at the naming ceremony.

Built by NACKS, COSCO SHIPPING SCORPIO is now among the world’s largest containerships, with an overall length of 400 meters, molded beam and depth of 58.6 and 30.7 meters, maximum deadweight of 197,000 tons, and design speed of 22.5 knots/hour. It is fitted with an intelligent ship energy efficiency system and offers advantages in low fuel consumption, large capacity, high intelligence and strong port worthiness. Its carrying capacity, operating speed and safety performance are among the top worldwide while its energy consumption is far less than its peers and energy efficiency index about 50% lower than the industry benchmark, meeting the international emission standard in a decade. An LNG system is reserved on board for the future conversion of large-capacity LNG bunker serving in specific routes. The vessel is also assigned the characters of classification in terms of its environmental friendliness and binding force calculation in specific routes. It meets the requirements of CSS CODE, Hong Kong Convention, and the newly effective Ballast Water Convention. Based on the application of antifouling paint and optimizations in sewage management, garbage management, oil pollution control, ballast water management, shore power system and ship-breaking management, the vessel has become a new generation of ultra-large containership which is environmentally friendly throughput the lifecycle.

Upon delivery, COSCO SHIPPING SCORPIO will serve on the Mediterranean route in Europe (AEU3), providing a greater stimulus for COSCO SHIPPING Lines to further optimize its global liner route planning and offer more convenient, reliant, secure and efficient end-to-end integrated transportation services to its clients.
