On July 19, the first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplied by the Yamal LNG project, a major energy cooperation project between China and Russia, arrived at PetroChina’s Rudong LNG Terminal in Jiangsu via the Northeast Passage. It opened a new chapter of LNG supply to China by the Yamal project, bringing new LNG sources to China’s clean energy supply. A grand ceremony was held for this at the terminal. Leaders who addressed the ceremony included Mr. Nur Bekri, Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission and Director of the National Energy Administration, Mr. Zhang Jianhua, President of PetroChina, Mr. Ma Qiulin, Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province, Mr. Alexander Novak, Energy Minister of Russia, Mr. Leonid Mikhelson, Chairman of the Management Board of PAO NOVATEK and Mr. Sun Jiakang, Executive Vice President and Deputy Party Secretary of COSCO SHIPPING. Chinese and foreign representatives from the Silk Road Fund, China Development Bank and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines also attended the ceremony.
In his speech, Mr. Sun Jiakang said LNG shipping is one of the fast-growing businesses of COSCO SHIPPING’s energy sector. As a key LNG transportation service supplier for the Yamal project, COSCO SHIPPING offers 14 of the 15 ARC7 ice-class LNG carriers for the project, and has won the bid for four conventional vessels. It can be called a trailblazer of the LNG shipping route in the Arctic, or the Polar Silk Road.
The Yamal project is the first mega energy cooperation project implemented in Russia after the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed. The project was jointly developed by PAO NOVATEK, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), France’s Total and China’s Silk Road Fund. It was the first time that the Yamal project offered LNG to China through the Bering Strait along the Northeast Passage. The entire voyage is about 10,700 kilometers long, 13,400 kilometers shorter than the regular Sueze Canal route. It takes approximately 20 days on average, saving at least 20 days than the traditional Sueze route.
As a major player of LNG transportation in the world, COSCO SHIPPING will carry forward its core values of “putting customers first and ensuring safety”, coordinate with its clients, continue to strengthen safety management and risk control, and improve its comprehensive abilities in serving global clients.
