On July 25, 2018, Chinese President Xi Jinping was invited to attend the BRICS Business Forum held in Johannesburg, South Africa and delivered an important speech titled “Keeping Abreast of the Trend of the Times to Achieve Common Development”. He called on the BRICS countries to keep abreast of the historical trend, pursue win-win cooperation, innovation and inclusive growth, uphold multilateralism and play a constructive role in building a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for mankind, according to Xinhua.
On the morning of June 26, 2018, local time, top leaders of the five BRICS countries, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Brazilian President Michel Temer, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a dialogue with members of the BRICS Business Council during the 10th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. Capt. Xu Lirong, Chairman of the Chinese Chapter of BRICS Business Council and Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING, Mr. Dai Houliang, Chairman of Sinopec, Mr. Chen Siqing, Chairman of Bank of China, Mr. Ren Hongbin, Chairman of Sinomach and Mr. Lu Yimin, President of China General Technology attended the dialogue on behalf of the Chinese chapter.
On behalf of the Chinese chapter, Capt. Xu Lirong delivered the BRICS Business Council Annual Report 2017-2018 to President Xi Jinping.
On July 25, the BRICS Business Forum was held in Johannesburg. Chinese President Xi Jinping and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the closing ceremony. Capt. Xu attended the forum and listened to President Xi’s speech.
Prior to the summit, the BRICS Business Council held its 2018 annual meting from July 22 to 23 in Durban, South Africa. More than 450 representatives from the five national chapters, the New Development Bank (NDB) and some other organizations attended the meeting. The participants adopted the BRICS Business Council Annual Report 2017-2018 and listened to reports by the nine working groups while clarifying the next steps. Capt. Xu signed the annual report on behalf of the Chinese chapter.
At the meeting, Capt. Xu expected business communities of the five countries to maintain close communication, further implement the MOU on Strategic Cooperation with the NDB, advance cooperation in key areas such as regional aviation, digital economy and integrated logistics infrastructure, and encourage more enterprises to engage in dialogue and collaboration through the Council. He also invited BRICS companies to the inaugural China International Import Expo scheduled for this November in Shanghai.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Capt. Xu and members of the five national chapters attended a meeting with Mr. Sihle Zikalala, Vice Governor of KwaZulu-Natal Province and a breakfast meeting with the NDB.
To fulfill its social responsibilities, COSCO SHIPPING made donations at a charity auction luncheon hosted by the South Africa Soong Ching Ling Foundation on July 23. All donations will be used for constructing the building of a skills training center for orphans in the country. COSCO SHIPPING Lines (South Africa) Co., Ltd. received a donation certificate as well as a special contribution award on behalf of COSCO SHIPPPING and the Chinese chapter of the BRICS Business Council.
On July 22 and 24, Capt. Xu hosted working meetings with COSCO SHIPPING Lines (South Africa) Co., Ltd. and COSCO SHIPPING (Africa) Co., Ltd. in Durban and Johannesburg, respectively, and greeted Chinese and foreign employees there.
